Tbh I can't stand it when people self diagnose themselves with mental illness or disease because they are not professionals, now I'm not trying to say that there aren't cases when a self diagnoses could be right, but all the same I don't think anyone should do it. I think they should seek out a professional before diagnosing themselves with anything

I think some people want their self-diagnosis to be real and are afraid a professional will say "you're fine." Other people are afraid they will be diagnosed as "worse" than they hoped. And some people are afraid a professional may cure them and they'll have to find a new self-identity.

I feel as though humanity rather thrives on misery, doesn't it? From the dawn of mankind, people have delighted in surrounding themselves in misery of all sorts, and from the very beginning, everyone has pretended this not to be the case. Recovery from a miserable condition is seen as abysmal to one's identity because then the former patient becomes part of the general public, and despite everyone's desire to fit in, we all wretchedly despise the very notion of being like everybody else.

9Little push back on this, but there is a history of psychological diagnosis that has been inaccurate as well based on the the response individual. This is not to say the system is invalid but it does leave the ability to give to correct response to be diagnosed with a mental disorder. We live in a world of mental problems that people have dealt with for centuries but some how now it is realized that the metal disorders you thought you had actually is part of being human. ADHD is just an example of that. The focus should be not "if I have or dont have a mental illness", but "how can I live my best life despite these setbacks". Main people see people with mental disabilities as a hindrance and a roadblock to success. But we all have our mental battles to fight. Some are over anxiety, some are over depression, and some are over attention. The goal should be figuring out how to live life to the very best, not if I have a mental disorder or not. From a thoughtful psychologist.

Those are great points. I think it says a lot that a person can go to 3 different professionals and get 3 different diagnoses. It's not an exact science and personality/culture play a role too.

The people that tend to self diagnose also tend to do nothing to treat it. I would be most concerned about those actively trying to self treat something debilitating, but their treatment requires professional assistance.

I wasn't being an asshole. I was making a statement. I couldn't help myself. A little improvement is good for anyone. I'll concede to your wishes.

I have to say I agree bc I've known people with self diagnosed OCD and it's like they use it as a crutch. If they start doing things that annoys us or stay getting bothered because of something we do then they try to dismiss our frustration by saying, "this is me and my OCD, I drive myself crazy at times" or "just ignore me, you know how my OCD is" 😑

Ummm 🤔... I've seen a doctor prescribe cortisone for ring worm (which is a fungus) & not 🚫 an actual worm... #1. The doctor couldn't have diagnosed what they lady had if he prescribed her cortisol. #2. The cortisol did nothing but spread the ring worm making it worse. #3. Had the physician had the where with all to make a proper diagnosis, he/she would have prescribed an anti fungal topical cream. #4. Any athlete's foot cream, or even tea tree oil would cure ring worm... &&& What do you think medical malpractice lawsuits are? Where do you think that the term: misdiagnosis comes from. Not that you shouldn't go to the doctor when need, but always educate yourself.

Yes, cortisol would lessen the inflammatory response to the fungal infection and allow it to spread. If they had looked for the cause of the inflammation that would have been a little too much like doing their job which isn't en vogue.

I agree to an extent. Adhd/add in women are ignored/overlooked for decades before diagnosed. I knew i had adhd since i was in my 20s, i was diagnosed at 34. I have had athletic induced asthma since i was a child. Not being able to breathe when i exert myself is a dead giveaway. However, there have been times where going to the drs has proven to be a good idea. As long as you don't assume the worst each time or call a singular trait out as you being (insert mental illness here), it's not a big deal. It's not like you can prescribe yourself drugs or anything.

2Definitely. Don't assume because there's a lot of disorders that share similiar symptoms but are not the same.

Yeah I know a lot of ppl who insist there's something wrong with them no matter the fact a doctor isn't able to diagnose them. I think sometimes people can conjure illnesses by dawning on them avidly.

I totally agree with you to a degree. That degree would be something like multi personality disorder. I dont think this should be self diagones at all but a prefessional should defo. But the one i make the exception for would be depression and anxiety. These two are the exception for me because of what it means to get professionally diagnosed with these things. First of all how many people are actually willing to share about them self to the degree that they could get diagnosed with it? Obvisouly if somekne has either of these i will do ma damndest to get them helo if they need it and professional help if possible. But sometimes and this may be only my opinion but only sharing to very close friends about how you feel and them helping get to a stable point can be more helpful that professional help. Therapist ask questions to try to help the eprson get through it but sometimes they can ask the wrong question and it sets them back. And after getting them through hardships wouldnt it be wrong to be like "dont say you are depressed because you havent been professionally diagonsed" like ot doesnt always take a professional to know that terrible thoughts are massive sign of depression or that struggling to breath while public speaking is a sign of anxiety.

7I don't self diagnose, but I know of a few mental health professionals who say that if you can't afford to go for a professional dx that it's okay in that instance to self diagnose. But I totally understand what you're saying, Elijah.
