2Chemical engineering. I chose it because I really enjoyed AP chemistry in high school, and I got introduced to chemical engineering that way. Either one of the best or worst decisions of my life. š„²

9Forensic psychology. I was working on a degree in forensic anthropology first but transferred schools halfway through undergrad. The new school didn't have my major so I picked the next best thing. Haven't been disappointed yet.

2Really neat! Do you want to be a CSI?

9It is an interesting field but, no, I don't plan on becoming a CSI.

Man, I always had a fantasy of being a detective. Minus the potential of being killed or the long boring parts, like hours in staking out someone. Forensics pathology might have been a better route, but I just love uncovering mysteries, so I'm probably not the best fit for the job anyway. I also have a bit of bias towards police, given my experiences, they wouldn't want me. But it sounds like you will have a very interesting job nonetheless!

9I'm satisfied just being a soldier. I'm in school now for a joint JD/PhD in forensic psychology so maybe I'll teach once I retire.

2When I was very very young I used to watch the Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley series, and I would write mystery stories modeled after those tapes. It was the best of times, it was the worst of time. š„²

2I rewatched two episodes a while ago and theyāre actually pretty funny! I mean, given that Mary-Kate and Ashley were sitcom veterans at that point, that was kind of expected. But I definitely recommend checking out some episodes on YouTube, if youāre interested!

I'm not in school (college dropout) but I just want to say I am so impressed by your academic achievement and drive.

2Oh gosh, you have no idea how much I want to drop out š but if all goes well, I can expect to graduate next spring.

I had a brutal senior year, like they wanted to just unload on us with the full weight of the real world in such a short time frame. It's always gonna be worth finishing, even if you have had tests, presentations, senior projects, labs, etc. All back to back consecutively for almost two weeks. Stick to it, if you got this far you will graduate. I never met anyone who got to senior year in engineering that didn't graduate.

2Thanks for the encouragement. I think a big part of what discouraged me was how even before COVID, I couldnāt connect with any of the other chemical engineering students in my original graduating class (they graduate after this term). But now I have two fellow chemical engineering friends, so the setback was a blessing in disguise. Plus last term I got to use the extra time I had due to my failure to work as an intern. The only bad things about the gap term I took was just that I miss work and my coworkers, and they miss me too. That, along with the aftermath of the pandemic, drastically decreased my will to learn big brain stuff.

7I already finished school. It was awful. I just self teach nowadays, not a whole lot different from my approach in school to actually gaining understanding. Computer engineering Masters degree? More like too lazy to apply to companies so I wanted status that would make companies apply to me.

2I thought I would be capable of teaching myself. And I certainly could, but I guess what Iām trying to say is that I wouldnāt have enough drive to do that , at least not today š I honestly donāt know if my younger self would be more proud of what Iāve achieved or disappointed at how far Iāve fallen from ambition š„²

Until you graduate, engineering will be the worst decision. After you graduate, best decision. At least that's how it felt for me š

2I think what Iām most worried about is not whether Iāll get hired right after graduating, but whether I will even be able to tolerate working in engineering. Iām willing to give any industry a try, but I am most interested in working in pharmaceuticals. I did get to intern at a biopharma company last term, and that was a great experience! I didnāt do any engineering work while I was there; rather I was working in metrology and performed many calibrations.

The good thing is, many people see engineering and will think you are qualified for a lot of entry level positions you would otherwise never have a chance in getting. Definitely don't let your degree constrain yourself to solely 'chemical engineering jobs.' There are tons of employers smart enough to realize the value in stealing an engineer away from their respective industries.

2Yeah, I have actually ventured a little into material science & engineering, and Iām currently taking an environmental engineering fundamentals course that relates to some of what Iāve learned in chemical engineering so far, so thatās cool! But the biggest issue for me right now is pushing myself to actually learn something again. I think what really disillusioned me from caring so much about my academic performance, other than the pandemic of course, was specifically during my first term of sophomore year, I was taking a notorious intro to chem E course alongside orgo 1. While I feel like I put way more effort into orgo, I ended that class with a C+ and ended the Chem E course with a B, and I think I failed one midterm and got a D in the other. (Bless the curve š„²). But the curve couldnāt save me in Heat & Mass transfer, nor in Analysis (MATLAB) š„²
