5In the United States I know we have swung pretty heavily towards a standardized model for teaching children and teens. Particularly in the form of testing and test prep. Im curious, what are the arguements for or against this trend? Have you had experiences where this educational model helped or hindered your growth as a learner?

To me the issue isn't testing but that we're not teaching American children how to read, write and do basic math. According to the US government, about 2/3 of high school seniors aren't proficient in reading or math. And that's not counting the people who dropped out. 10% of students never attend a math class beyond basic Geometry Algebra 1. About 30% of 12th graders can't read at even a basic level. Only 6% are advanced at reading and only 3% of seniors are advanced at math. It's unbelievable and no one talks about it.

6Let's not forget how we believe advanced biology is essential for every student, but not how to do taxes, or balance a checkbook, or, sadly, do laundry. I've had to teach so many young men these basic skills because no one else did, and it's shameful as a country to send people out into the world so completely unprepared

A veteran once told me she's thankful the army taught her how to do basic stuff like laundry and cleaning. She had no idea how to take care of herself. I felt the same way when I went to Community College and learned basic math and science. Understanding Algebra and graphs has come in handy over and over during my career. We're some of the lucky ones. The entire American school system needs to be reformed from the top down.

5My argument is simple: The Common Core was never legally passed. And yet it was still used by many, many schools. It shouldn't have been.
