Real mental damage? Is that why you need consent of whoever you are bonded to? I would politely decline any requests for this, if it meant the risk of mental harm. Seems dangerous.

You do not need consent from both parties to do this. Normally one one side is completely willing to do it anyway. The mental risk is more of if you are doing it for two people who do not wish to have it done to them. Little to no harm should occur if at least one party is aware of and okay with you doing this. The damage is more from them not knowing what is happening and the shock of losing a thread, which is why this mainly done for people who wish to cut all ties with an ex or abusive person in their life. This isn't a ritual open to just randomly cut ties. It has to be done for good intents with the goal being clear and known to the party who wanted it done. Most times, one or both parties no the other wants nothing to do with them, and if they are a believer may do this. It isn't a real risk unless you do it wrong.
