How do you get the gel pen to shade without ruining it?

I use scumbling technique for gel pens. In my opinion, gel pens are better for scumblings while ballpoint pens are better cross-hatching.

Okay thank you, I actually feel the opposite I do better at (I had to look up the word and I'm still not certain I have it right) stumbling with a ballpoint, but trying line shading I do better with a fine gel pen or going for a less detailed style with bigger gel pens. But I love waiting to watch them dry just a few seconds but it's so beautiful

I tried both with techniques with gel pen and ballpoint pen. Scumbling is the superior technique for both pens however it costs A LOT of time. In my opinion, cross-hatching looks horrible in gel pen compared to scumbling, no matter how hard I try to master it. Ball point pen looks natural on both techniques.
